May 17th is one of the biggest and most important days of the year. It’s called Constitution Day or “Syttende Mai” (“Seventeenth of May”).
It celebrates the signing of Norway’s constitution at the Eidsvoll Building on May 17, 1814. At the time, Norway was emerging from centuries under Danish rule and was trying to establish itself as an independent nation. Norway’s celebration is centred around children, community, and national pride.
For many Norwegians, including Norwegian-Canadians, it’s a deeply emotional and proud day tied to identity, freedom, democracy, and heritage.
I am proud of my Norwegian Heritage. And, I am also proud to be Canadian.
